The IBBY* Honour List 2010: A Presentation of the Best

The IBBY Honour List is a unique biennial survey of what is the best in children’s literature worldwide. It is a presentation of the work of outstanding children’s book writers, illustrators and translators who have been nominated by its member countries. With an ever increasing number of nominations from these national sections, this presentation has indeed become one of IBBY’s most important activities.     Entries are invited from national sections—now numbering over 70. The proposed books must have been first published no earlier than 3 years before nomination. The books should be characteristic of their country and suitable to be recommended by IBBY for publication in other languages.     Seven copies of the books are used for the Honour List presentation at the next IBBY Congress—this time in Santiago de Compostela in Spain in 2010, and at the Bologna Book Fair, as well as for travelling exhibitions. Renowned libraries and institutions all over the world—the International Youth Library in Munich, the Swiss Institute for Child and Youth Media in Zurich, Bibiana in Bratislava, the Japanese Board on Books for Young People, and the Northwestern University Library in Illinois—all keep a set of Honour List books in their permanent collections.     Nominees and their publishers are invited to attend the Honour List ceremony during the IBBY Congress where IBBY Honour List Diplomas are presented. A catalogue of Honour List books is presented to all Congress participants. Later it is distributed worldwide. So it is evident that selected books get great exposure.     The Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC), which is the Indian Section of IBBY, invited entries from all Indian publishers of books for children. The evaluators, all experts in the field of children’s literature, went through all the books painstakingly, looking for outstanding artistic and literary qualities in books that were well produced and had an ‘Indianness’ about them. It was difficult for them to reach a final conclusion since all the books were so attractive and exhibited great writing skills, with illustrations in a tremendous diversity of styles.   So it is with great pleasure that AWIC nominates the following books for the IBBY Honour List 2010:   Author category – From Somewhere Out There by Karthika Dass. Illustrated by Ankur Mitra Children’s Book Trust, 2009 About the book: Siddharth and Sowmya, fourteen ...
