Ten recent releases from Tulika—what a treat for a reviewer! Award-winning author Jerry Pinto’s Hey, That’s An A (4 ) is an alphabet book with a difference. It combines physical exercise with cognitive action. ‘Put your right hand up. Put your left hand up. bring your fingers together, Then your thumbs. Hey! That’s an A.’ In flexing the familiar body parts to form the yet-unfamiliar letters, the small child finds learning a process of self-discovery. Sayan Mukherjee, a graduate of the Indian Art College, Kolkata, substantiates Jerry Pinto’s text with lively shapes in lovely colours. As shown at the end, many of us unconsciously form a Z when we go zzzzz … to sleep. From A to Z, this alphabet book is fun learning. In Nabiya (6 ) I met an eight-year-old girl, the daughter of a painter-plumber-electrician living in a kholi in Mumbai. Despite her less privileged background, she is full of joie de vivre. She attends a local school where the English teacher Savita reads out stories from books and encourages her pupils to write stories of their own. ‘Savita Teacher’ even visits Nabiya on Eid and gifts her the photocopy of a book Nabiya had liked a lot in the class. The book thus ends with the happy beginning to a ‘journey into the world of words’. The author Chatura Rao writes for children as well as leads writing workshops for children. In Nabiya, she has sensitively recounted her experiences and the illustrator Ruchi Mhsane has delicately yet authentically brought them to life. Like Nabiya, Minu and her Hair (3 ) ...
